Origin of the MLB Trading Deadline
The MLB Trading Deadline was established to prevent teams from making trades late in the season that could unfairly influence playoff outcomes. This technique became more noticeable after the New York Yankees' trade of Joe Dugan in 1922, which raised concerns about competitive integrity. See? Competitive balance concerns all the way back to 1922!
Initial Date: The deadline was originally set for June 15. Over the years, the deadline was moved to July 31, where it remained for many decades.
